Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales are beloved both in Denmark and around the world. What better way to celebrate one of the most famous Danes from history than by hanging a beautiful print depicting one of his stories on your wall. Here at Project Nord, we have created this collection to do just that. Take a look below.
Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales are known all around the world and have been adapted for film, television, dance, and various other art forms. One such form is the art poster, and here at Project Nord, we have created a collection of prints inspired by Andersen’s classic fairy tales that are perfect for any room in your home.
The Perfect Poster for Every Room
In this collection, we have recreated several beloved and well-known Andersen fairy tales including The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling and Thumbelina. What perfect way to celebrate these famous stories than by prominently featuring a beautiful poster of your favourite Andersen tale on your walls.
A poster from this collection would look perfect in any room of your house. For example, the sea theme from our ‘The Little Mermaid’ print would complement perfectly in a bathroom or child’s bedroom. Our Thumbelina print is perfect for adding a little splash of colour to your kitchen and our ‘The Red Shoes’ print would look perfect hanging in the hallway.
Try pairing these prints as well. For example, our ‘The Ugly Duckling’ and ‘The Red Shoes’ would look perfect together due to their similar beige backgrounds. They are a truly perfect match. Or, if you are feeling a little braver and wish to mix and match colour schemes, try pairing our ‘The Little Mermaid’ print with ‘The Little Match Girl’. Both feature a singular female figure and both have small flecks of yellow, whilst also having similar hued yet different colours for a background.
Who was Hans Christian Andersen?
Hans Christian Andersen is arguably one of the most famous Danes to ever have lived. He is beloved here in his native Denmark, as well as around the world. His stories have been told to generations of young children and continue to this day to be pioneering works within this genre.
Andersen was born in 1805 in Odense, Denmark. His family was not wealthy but Andersen was educated at a private boarding school, leading many to speculate whether he was an illegitimate member of the Danish royal family, however, this rumour has remained just that.
Andersen initially worked as an actor when he was a teenager but went back to school where he was patronaged by a man called Jonas Collin. It was Collin who supported Andersen’s writing endeavours.
In 1829, Andersen first gained some recognition for his work of short stories and followed this with a play and poetry. This allowed him to receive a grant from the king and he travelled through Europe and started writing his famous fairy tales.
Funnily enough, his works for adults were more well-known during his own life, whereas his children’s fairy tales became more well-known later on especially after 1845 when his work was translated into English. Andersen even had a close friendship with English author Charles Dickens! After a fall, Andersen died in Copenhagen in 1875 aged 70.
Andersen’s most famous works include The Little Mermaid (which was of course adapted into the famous Disney animated film), The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Princess and the Pea, The Snow Queen (which was a basis for Disney’s Frozen) and The Little Match Girl.
